Vladimir is proud of its two major universities: Vladimir State University and Vladimir State Pedagogical University. VSU enrolls about 10,000 students, including foreign students, and it has branches in other cities such as Murom. VSU was formerly a “technical institute,” and it remains strong in the scientific and technological fields.

VSPU enrolls approximately 5,000, including some foreign students. As the name implies, this university specializes in teacher training programs and the humanities. Unfortunately, today many teacher education graduates seek employment in other fields because of the serious shortage of educational funding.

In addition to the two universities, Vladimir has 11 government-financed technical schools, 54 elementary and secondary schools, and 94 pre-schools. There are also a number of privately run schools such as the Vladimir Tourism Academy and several business schools.

The American Home, for example, is officially registered to teach English. More than 10,000 Vladimirites have studied for at least one semester with the Home's native speaking teachers since 1992. The American Home is also registered to teach Russian to foreigners.
Erlangen House, which is operated by Vladimir 's German Sister City, offers German classes. Among other things, they sponsor a yearly language contest, the winner of which gets an all expense paid two week trip to Germany along with the winners from other parts of Russia.

In addition to the regular educational program, there are specialized schools that students can attend in the afternoons. The subjects covered include the arts, sports, science and engineering.
Despite their relatively low salaries and limited educational operating funds, Vladimir's teachers are dedicated to their jobs.
