The average annual rainfall equivalent is 560 mm (approximately 22 inches). Approximately two thirds of this comes as rain during the warmer seasons.

Spring generally runs from April through about the middle of June.

The summer season begins in the middle of June and generally runs through about the middle of August. Fall usually arrives by the end of August when temperatures begin to drop—but in some years summer can stretch into September.

Fall generally lasts until about the middle of November when the first major snowfalls occur.

As strange as it may seem, given the short days, the often overcast skies, and the extreme cold, most Russians prefer the winter months and wait anxiously each fall for the snow to begin. For one thing, especially on a sunny day after a fresh snowfall, the landscape is breathtakingly beautiful. See Photo Gallery.

Winter is the longest season, lasting from about the middle of November until March or even April. There is generally several feet of snow on the ground during the long winter months—which protects plants from freezing.

*Packing tip:  Come prepared to "layer" your clothing up and down.  It can be quite warm in October and quite cool in July.
