According to some specialists, the City of Vladimir is founded by Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavich (“The Red Sun”) of Kiev.

1108

Depending on whom you consult, prince Vladimir Monomakh either strengthens the city or founds it.

1157

Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky (“Loved by God”), son of Prince Yuri Dolgoruky (“The Long Arm”), officially transfers the throne from Suzdal to Vladimir.

1158

Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky begins construction of the Assumption Cathedral.

1164

The Golden Gates, one of the most famous historic and architectural sites in Vladimir, are built.

1169

Vladimir officially replaces Kiev as the Grand Principality of Russia.

1174

Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky is murdered and Vsevolod III (“Big Nest”) ascends the throne.

1185

Assumption Cathedral is destroyed by a citywide fire. It's rebuilt under the direction of Prince Vsevolod III “Big Nest.”

1191

The Nativity Monastery, where Andrei Bogolyubsky and Alexander Nevsky are later buried, is founded.

1194

Construction on St. Demetrius Cathedral is started under the direction of Grand Prince Vsevolod III.

1197

St. Demetrius Cathedral is completed.

1200-01

The Princess Convent is founded by Princess Maria Shvarnova, the wife of Vsevolod III.

1223

The Tatar-Mongolian invasion of Russia begins.

1238

The city is burned by the Tatar-Mongolian invaders.

1252

Prince Alexander Nevsky, grandson of Prince Vsevolod III, ascends the thrown in Vladimir.

1263

Prince Nevsky dies and is buried in the Nativity Monastery.

1778

The city becomes the center of the province of Vladimir.

1797

Vladimir 's first printing press is brought to the city by Muscovite publisher Mikhail Ponomarev.

1838

Alexander Herzen, a revolutionary writer during the tsarist era, is exiled to Vladimir
The Moscow - Nizhni Novgorod highway is constructed.

1860

A municipal water system is built.

1861

A rail line is constructed through Vladimir.

1887

A telephone system is installed throughout the city.

1893

The church of Archangel Michael is built.

1896

The first city bank is built.

1901

The Historical museum is built.

1905

The Public Meeting Hall is built. Over the years it is used as a library, a movie theater, and a drama theater. It is now the home of Vladimir's puppet theater.

1907

The City Hall is built. From 1948 to 1985 this building is used as a “Pioneer (youth) Palace.” It is now being restored.

1909

An electric power station is built.

1916

Construction of the Old Believer's Trinity Church is completed.  (The church now houses an excellent collection of glass, crystal, lacquer boxes, and embroidery.)

1935

Yamskoye sloboda is officially incorporated by the city of Vladimir, and the neighborhood becomes a part of Leninsky raion (Lenin district).

1944

The city becomes the administrative center of the Vladimir region

1956

The site of the ancient (more than 25,000 year old) settlement of “Sungir” is discovered between Vladimir and Bogolyubovo near the highway to Nizhni Novogorod.

1962

The village of Marynka is incorporated by Vladimir; it becomes a part of Oktyabrsky District—but is still informally referred to as Marynka.

1967

The Frunzensky district, previously the village of Krasnoye Selo, is officially incorporated by Vladimir.

1992

Vladimir's “white stone” architectural monuments (Assumption Cathedral, St. Demetrius Cathedral, and the Golden Gates) are added to the UNESCO World Heritage List
The “American Home” is built.

1995

“Erlangen House” is dedicated (Vladimir's German Sister City renovates an existing building).

2003

A statue of Alexander Nevsky is dedicated.
The “Italian Center” is opened.

2004

“Patriarch Garden” is dedicated (The Youth Naturalist Club converts what had been a garden dedicated to the 15 Republics of the old Soviet Union to honor the leader of the Orthodox Church).

2005

St. Demetrius Cathedral is opened to the public after being closed for 30 years for renovations.
